Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies

Mission of the department is to train highly qualified competent specialists in the field of foreign philology, translation studies and intercultural communication, fluent in the official language, the language of international communication and foreign languages with deep knowledge in the field of linguistics, literary criticism, theory and practice of translation. The department implements 8 educational programs:: 1. Bachelor degree: 6B02303 - Foreign Philology (Western languages), 6B02304 – Translation Studies (Western languages); 2. Master's degree: 7M02312 - Foreign Philology (Western languages), 7M02303 – Translation Studies (Western languages), 7M02316 - Simultaneous translation (Western languages), 7M02301 - Translation Studies and Professional Communication ( 1 year); 3. Doctorate: 8D02306 - Foreign Philology (Western languages), 8D02302 - Translation Studies (Western languages).

History of the department

The Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies has almost 30 years of history. The Department of Theory of Literary Creativity and Literary Translation was established in 1996 by decision of the Academic Council of the Kazakh National University and at the direct suggestion of the dean of the Faculty of Philology, Professor Zhangar Dadebayuly. In the first years, the department was formed as a special department in the republic in the specialty of translation, in particular, “literary translation”. Later, the department was named "Theory and Methods of Translation" and became the head department for the training of bachelor's, master's and doctoral students in the field of "Translation Studies".

Specialization of the department: literary translation, literary comparative studies, literary criticism, theory of translation, simultaneous translation, interpretation, cognitive aspects of translation, pedagogical activity, scientific work, literary employee in state culture and literature organizations.

Since 2015, the name of the department has been changed to "Foreign Philology and Translation" and it has become the basic department that trains specialists in two direction.

At present, the department is employing 39 teachers, including: 5 doctors, 14 candidates, 5 PhDs, 12 masters, 3 lecturers.
