Social protection or social security refers to one of the human rights and, according to its definition, is a set of measures and programs aimed at reducing and preventing poverty and insecurity of people throughout their life cycle.
Socially vulnerable segments of the population include people who need support from the state for objective reasons beyond their control. This may be disability due to illness, old age or social role, loss of property due to a natural disaster or man-made accident.
Social protection plays a key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, social protection policies, including for vulnerable segments of the population, are a vital element of national development strategies that aim to reduce poverty and insecurity of people throughout their lives.
