Zarema Shaukenova was born on September 29, 1965 in the city of Shymkent. In 1982, she graduated from high school No. 20 in Temirtau and entered the Faculty of Psychology at Leningrad State University (LSU).
She began her career in 1987 at the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant, having worked at KARMET for 10 years (psychologist, head of the personnel stabilization bureau, head of the socio-psychological service).
In 1997, with the support of the founders of the Institute for Comparative Social Research “CESSI” (Russian Federation, Moscow), Z.K. Shaukenova created the CESSI Kazakhstan Institute in the new capital of Kazakhstan and headed it from 1997 to 2007. "CESSI Kazakhstan" has become an authoritative research organization in the field of public opinion research.
In 1994, having completed a correspondence postgraduate course at St. Petersburg State University, she defended her PhD thesis in social psychology on the topic “The direction of a leader’s personality: diagnosis and correction (on the example of a large industrial enterprise).”
In 2000, she became an applicant at the Department of Sociology of KazNU named after. al-Farabi and in 2003 defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic “Social interaction of ethnic groups in modern Kazakh society.” Along with scientific research, Zarema Shaukenova constantly transfers her practical experience, working part-time as a teacher, senior lecturer, associate professor at Karaganda State University named after. In 2007 Z.K. Shaukenova was appointed dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science of KazNU. As dean, Z.K. Shaukenova headed the interdisciplinary Dissertation Council on sociology, psychology and pedagogy.
Became the owner of a state scientific scholarship for scientists and specialists who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of science and technology of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2008-2009.
In 2011 Z.K. Shaukenova was appointed director of the Institute of Philosophy and Political Science of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. At the Institute, research in the field of philosophy and religion was widely developed, which grew into the development of religious studies in general. And it is natural that in 2012 the Institute was transformed into the Institute of Philosophy, Political Science and Religious Studies. The Institute initiated and organized the first Kazakhstan Philosophical Congress “Philosophy in the Modern World: Development Strategy” on September 27-28, 2013 in Almaty. Z.K. Shaukenova became the first president of KFC. Philosophers, scientists of the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science of KazNU, being active members of the KFC, make a huge contribution to the consolidation of the philosophical and social-humanitarian community of the republic. An important area of activity of the Institute in these years was the training of scientific personnel.
In 2014, the Institute of Philosophy, Political Science and Religious Studies became the center of a unique project for the integration of science and education, initiated by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Z.K. Shaukenova was appointed to the specially created position of Vice-Rector of KazNU for the integration of science and education (part-time).
In 2017, she was appointed director of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Since 2022 - Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NAS RK).
Z.K. Shaukenova is the author of more than 200 scientific and scientific-methodological works, including author’s and collective monographs.
