Students of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences undergo field training, which is an important part of their educational process. 2nd year students of the educational program 6B05205 “Geography” of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University successfully complete a comprehensive zonal internship, which follows the route Almaty - Balkhash - Karaganda - Bayanaul - Borovoye - Astana. During the internship, students study various natural zones of Kazakhstan, which allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice and deepen their understanding of environmental processes in different regions of the country. Particular attention was paid to the study of ecosystems and natural landscapes, which contributed to the development of students' skills in field research and analysis of environmental data.  As part of the practice, garbage collection campaigns were also carried out on the territory of the state national natural parks “Bayanauyl” and “Burabay” together with park employees, aimed at cleaning and improving natural areas. These events took place within the framework of the “Taza Kazakhstan” program. This event not only increased the environmental awareness of students, but also contributed to the conservation of the natural environment of Kazakhstan.

During the period of acclimatization and preparation for the training hike from the Turgen Gorge to the Kolsai Lakes, the students on the educational program “Tourism”  made radial trips to the Bear and Kairak waterfalls, as well as to the Oy-Zhailau tract. During radial outings, educational groups traditionally took part in the “March of Parks” campaign, collecting garbage along the trails and at tourist sites. This experience is especially useful for instilling a sense of personal responsibility for the preservation of the unique nature of Kazakhstan, the need for rational environmental management and ensuring the sustainability of tourism development.

For students of the 1st year of the educational program natural and man-made risks, a trip to the Charyn Gorge was organized according to an educational practice conducted in accordance with the discipline geomorphology and geodynamics. The students walked 5 kilometers along the Charyn Gorge to the Sharyn River. The Charyn Canyon is a unique geomorphological formation, manifested by a complex of interesting features formed over millions of years under the influence of various natural forces.

It is worth noting that as part of their internship, students organized a number of environmental events to preserve the ecosystem in the Turgen Gorge, Lake Kolsai and Kaiyndy and on campus.

The internship has become an important part of the professional development of future geographers, allowing them to broaden their horizons and gain valuable experience in field work that can contribute to the achievement of specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as ensuring quality education (SDG 4), ensuring sustainable consumption patterns and production (SDG 12), Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), combating climate change (SDG 13) and protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems (SDG15).
