On September 11, 2019, during the state visit of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to the People's Republic of China, an intergovernmental agreement was signed for the import of a supercomputer to Kazakhstan. On July 3, 2024, during the visit of the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, to Kazakhstan, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan held private talks and signed a series of important documents. As a result of this meeting, it was decided that the company "Qingdao Aucma Import & Export Co" would supply the supercomputer to KazNU. Soon after, the most powerful supercomputer in Central Asia was installed at the university.
According to Zhanseit Tuymebaev, Chairman of the Board and Rector of KazNU, the supercomputer cluster will not only increase Kazakhstan's competitiveness on the global stage but will also contribute to the development of domestic infrastructure. It provides vast opportunities for training qualified specialists in IT and artificial intelligence and expands the capabilities of professionals in the field of computing technology. The supercomputer will not only enhance the efficiency and accuracy of scientific research but also significantly reduce the time spent on scientific investigations. It features an application program for the comprehensive processing of genetic data. The program works from the preliminary processing of sequencing data to genome sequence analysis. This program is essential for scientists working with genetic data, as it simplifies and accelerates the genomic research process,” said Zhanseit Tuymebaev.
According to Amirhan Temirbaev, CEO of the Engineering and High Technologies Cluster, the supercomputer’s performance is 2,000 teraflops. It is among the top 600 supercomputers in the world. Its architecture includes processors from Intel and NVIDIA, whose power is 10,000 times greater than that of the most advanced personal computer. While current computers perform tasks over decades, the supercomputer can complete a task in just one hour.
"In the development of a large language model for the Kazakh language (LLM), implemented on the President's instructions, the supercomputer's capabilities are also being used. Furthermore, it is suitable for collecting data for the video surveillance system and the situational center of the 'Smart City' project in Almaty. Researchers across the country can utilize the computing power of the KazNU supercomputer in various fields, including climate modeling, the development of advanced machine learning algorithms, Big Data, and artificial intelligence," said A. Temirbaev.
