The mission of the Department of Kazakh Literature and Theory of Literatureis is to train high qualified and competent specialists in the field of Kazakh literature history, theory of literature, literary criticism, folklore studies, rhetoric, methodology of literary studies. The future specialists trained at the Deaprtment will have the perfect knowledge of modern IT tools to use them in the educational process and will have a perfect command of foreign languages. They will be competitive in the domestic and world labor market and be able to carry out literary research to popularize Kazakh literature and culture abroad. The Department of Kazakh Literature and Theory of Literature trains specialists in the following areas: 6B01701 – Kazakh Language and Literature; 7M01701 – Kazakh Language and Literature; 8D01701 – Kazakh Language and Literature; 6В02306 – Literary Studies; 7М02309 – Literary Studies; 8D02304 – Literary Studies; 6В02305 – Kazakh Philology; 7М02313 – Kazakh Philology; 8D02307 – Kazakh Philology. The Department of Kazakh Literature and Theory of Literature trains specialists on the major: "Literary Studies" in cooperation with M.O. Auezov Institute of Literature and Art.

History of the department
The Department of Kazakh literature was founded in 1940. The classic of Kazakh literature, academician, writer M. Auezov played a prominent role in the department foundation.
The first head of the Department was B.K. Kenzhebaev Doctor of Philology, Full Professor. Prominent figures of culture, scholars: academicians A. Margulan, Z.K. Kabdolov, P.A. Akhmeov, R. Nurgali, professor T.Nurtazin, corresponding member of NAS RK, professor E. Ismayilov, professor M. Gabdullin, professor T. Kakishuly, professor B. Shalabaev, professor B. Maitanov, professor J. Dadebaev, professor Z.-G.Bisengali, professor O. Abdimanuly made a significant contribution to the creation of the General Course: “History of Kazakh literature and to the development of literary studies. They worked at the department. They were heads and professors of the department.
Currently, in accordance with the strategy of the University’s development, the Department of Kazakh Literature has merged with the Department of Literature Theory and Folklore, founded in 2000, and renamed after the Department of Kazakh Literature and Theory of Literature. Head of the Department of Kazakh Literature and Theory of Literature is A. Temirbolat, Doctor of Philology, Full Professor.
There are 7 doctors of sciences, 14 candidates of sciences, 2 PhD, 5 senior lecturers, 1 lecturer at the Department.
