History of the department

The Department of World History, Historiography and Source Studies is the leading center for training specialists in the field of world history, archiving and library science in the republic. The department combined several specializations that play an important role in the training of historians, archivists and librarians. At present, the scientific and teaching staff of the Department of World History, Historiography and Source Studies has 45 scientists, 13 doctors of historical sciences, professors, 16 candidates of historical sciences, associate professors and 4 PhDs. At the department, the percentage of teaching staff with a degree is 89.9%.

The department trains specialists according to a three-stage model (bachelor, master, doctor) in educational programs 6B02205 - History; 7M01601 - History; 7M01602 - History and geography; 7M02210 - History; 8D02206 - History; 6B03204 - Archiving, document management and documentation support; 6B03208 - Digital archiving and document management; 7M03207 - IT Archiving and document management; 8D03205 - Archiving, document management and documentation support; 6B03205 - Library information systems; 7M03206 - Library Information Systems; 8D03206 - Library information systems.

The department has double degree programs developed with foreign universities included in the top 300 in QS WUR with La Sapienza in Italy with a degree in 7M02208 - World History and with the Russian State University for the Humanities with a degree in 7M03208 - Archival Science and Documentation Management (RSUH) .

The department attracts employers for lectures (Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan, National Center for Advanced Studies "Orleu") with a rate of at least 5 credits and well-known foreign scientists, such as Xavier Allez - researcher at the Higher School of Social Sciences (Paris , France), Etienne Peyrat - Researcher at the Higher School of Political Sciences (Paris, France), Fabio Grassi - Professor at the University of La Sapienza (Rome, Italy), Mariusz Marchevsky - Senior Researcher at the Institute of the Orient, representing the University. Adam Mickiewicz Museum in Poznan (Poland), Karabag Museyyn - PhD of Editepe University (Istanbul, Turkey), Volkan Ipek - PhD of Bilkent University (Ankara, Turkey), Viktor Denninghaus - Professor of Hamburg University (Hamburg, Germany), Natalia Yashina - Associate Professor of Kazan University (Kazan, RF).

Scientific and collegiate contacts have been established with a number of universities and scientific organizations of Germany, Italy, Austria, USA, Japan, Turkey, Poland. Teaching staff of the department undergo internships at universities that are in the top 300 in QS WUR, in the top 500 THE WUR. They publish scientific articles in rating journals indexed in Scopus with a non-zero SJR. Grants are attracted from outside, which are financed by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and for postdoctoral studies at KazNU, including under the “Zhas Galym” project. They organize international winter and summer schools.
