Department of International relations & the World Economy

After Kazakhstan declaring it’s independence and becoming part of the world community the need for qualified personnel for foreign policy agencies arose and the issue of training professionals in the fields of International relations and Diplomacy for the young nation became urgent. Therefore, by the initiative of Professor Zh. U. Ibrashev «International relations» Education program was established and entered the Republic’s Cluster of Specialties. It became a ground for the establishment of the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Kazakhstan within the faculty of History. From this moment several structural changes have been implemented within the Department. Due to the growth of faculty specified by the process of international programs and other activities of foreign relations it was necessary to focus all three specialties in one faculty. The Chair of International Relations and World Economy was founded by the resolution of the Rector of KazNu in June 2011 through merging of the Chair of World Economy and Area Studies with the Chair of International Relations, training specialists in 3 major fields : «5В020200-International relations», «5В050500-Area studies» and «5В051300-World economy». Currently, the teaching staff of the Department of International Relations and World Economy work in three specialties. All teachers of the department have academic degrees, including Doctors of Science in the specialty «History of International Relations» and «Economics»: K.I. Bayzakova, F.T. Kukeyeva, M.Sh. Gubaidullina, K.N. Makasheva, G.M. Movkebaeva, Mukhtarova K.S., Saparbaev A.Zh. International Relations and the World Economy Department is a major educational and scientific department that makes a significant contribution to the training of highly qualified specialists nowadays. To strengthen the position of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the modern system of international relations and for successful development of its foreign relations, our country needs highly qualified specialists - international specialists, regional experts and economists, prepared for analytical work, conducting diplomatic negotiations, coordinating international programs and other activities in the field of external economic relations. Teachers of the department actively involve their scientific developments into the educational process: these are new lecture courses and innovative seminars. In the educational process, much attention is paid to an individual approach to working with students, with consideration to their specialization. The department responds to new trends in higher education and the needs of government agencies. The department develops close cooperation with foreign universities. The students of the department take an active part in the summer schools, as well as practice in foreign universities. The teaching staff of the department closely cooperates with colleagues from foreign universities. Thanks to these contacts, professors of the foreign universities give lectures at the department, conduct seminars, conferences. Within the framework of the department, round tables and conferences on topical issues are held.

History of the department

After the proclamation of state independence of Kazakhstan and its entry into the international community was necessary to prepare qualified personnel to work in foreign institutions. In this regard, on the initiative of Professor Zh. Ibrashev the specialty "international relations" was included to the Republican classifier specialties. Under this specialty in 1992 the Chair of International Relations and Foreign Policy of the Republic of Kazakhstan was established in the framework of the History Department. In 1995 this department became a part of the newly formed Department of International Relations. The first chair was a prominent scholar on international affairs, historian, doctor of historical sciences, professor Zharas Umarovich Ibrashev. Over the years, the department was headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor. K.E. Baizakova, prof. F.T. Kukeeva, Doctor of History, Associate Professor S.Z. Sapanov. On September 1, 2010 E.S. Chukubaev, Ph.D., Associate Professor was appointed as the head of this chair.

In 2007 the Chair were reformed the restructured. The Chair of Regional and World Economy was established on the base of the order of the rector of al-Farabi Kazakh National University in July 2007 by combining the Chair of World Economy and branch "Regional Studies", functioned within the Chair t of International Relations and Foreign Policy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2007-2009 the as the head of the chair of new ”Regional studies and world economy” was appointed the doctor of historical sciences, professor of Chernikh I.A, since 2009 head of the Chair is doctor of historical sciences, Professor K.N Makasheva. The Chair has developed a specialty "Regional studies" and “World economy”. Until the end of the 2010-2011 school year, the Chair has 5 doctors of sciences, professors Yelemesov R.E, Kozhakhmetov K.K, Makasheva K.N, Chernikh I.A, Movkebaeva G.A and 8 PhDs, assistant professors: Byuzheeva B.Z., Myrzabekov M.S., Augan M., Zhunis K.A, Urozbaeva G.A, Myrzakhmetov A.M., Meduhanova L.A, Sadykova R.O.

By the executive order of the rector of the KazNU Mutanov G.M. Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of the RK and the Chair of Regional Studies and the World economy have been combined. Currently, the Department of International Relations and World Economy supervise three specialties: international relations, regional studies and global economy.
