Multiculturalism in Kazakhstan

26 november, 2025

On November 25, 2025, teachers of the Department of Language and General Education Training of Foreigners of the Faculty of Pre-University Education of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University held a traditional educational event "Multiculturalism in Kazakhstan". As part of this event, foreign students visited the Ascension Cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church in Almaty.

Such events are of great interest to foreign audiences, as Kazakhstan is a unique state with its own model of interethnic and interfaith harmony society, which unites representatives of more than 120 different nations and 40 religious associations under one roof.  Multiculturalism, which is a part of state policy, manifests itself as an unchanging way of life in modern Kazakh society. It is aimed at preserving, developing and harmonizing the cultural diversity of various ethnic and religious groups in our multinational country, promoting dialogue and cooperation between them.

Such events correspond to SDG 4 (target 4.7), the purpose of which is to familiarize students with the problems of sustainable development. Today, education plays an important role in maintaining and developing multiculturalism. It forms the basis for understanding and respecting cultural diversity and makes it possible to realize the value of different traditions and worldviews. Understanding and studying such processes educates young people in the key of respect for the spiritual foundations of representatives of multinational Kazakhstan. Foreign citizens who receive education in our country will learn with great interest about the basic principles of the internal structure of the state, where traditions, religions, and culture of diverse ethnic groups have historically harmoniously developed.

In accordance with task 4.7. "Education in the field of sustainable development and global citizenship", it is assumed that all students will be provided with the knowledge necessary to contribute to the goals of the United Nations, including on sustainable development and a sustainable lifestyle, as well as awareness of the value of cultural diversity and the contribution of culture to sustainable development. Fostering respect for cultural diversity and developing the skills necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals are becoming key aspects in preparing future generations.
