An Open Educational Session on SDG–16: “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” Held at Al-Farabi KazNU

20 november, 2025

On November 20, 2025, the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted an open educational session dedicated to one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — SDG–16: “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.” The event was organized as part of the teaching practice of the Department of Mathematical and Computer Modeling.

The session was conducted by Zulfiya Seitmuratova, a first-year master's student of the educational program “7M05409 – Applied and Computational Mathematics,” for the PM–23–2 student group. The activity was held under the supervision of the Deputy Head of the Department for Academic, Methodological and Educational Work, Lida Absyltankyzy Sagimbayeva.

The purpose of the open session was to introduce students to the essence of SDG–16, strengthen their understanding of principles of justice, transparency, and institutional effectiveness, and promote civic responsibility and legal awareness.

The event was organized in a role-play format, allowing students to analyze a scenario close to real-life legal and ethical situations. Participants were divided into groups representing judges, prosecutors, and defenders, who examined a dispute related to public procurement. Each group presented its arguments and engaged in discussion to reach a fair and well-reasoned decision.

During the session, students discussed important topics such as:

  • principles of justice and legality;
  • corruption risks;
  • transparency and effectiveness of state institutions;
  • public trust and its impact on governance.

This interactive format helped students deepen their understanding of the values of a lawful and just society, develop their civic stance, and strengthen their sense of social responsibility.

At the end of the session, department representative L.A. Sagimbayeva emphasized the educational significance of the event and encouraged students to uphold the principles of honesty, responsibility, and fairness.

The open educational session contributed to students’ awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals, increased their social engagement, and highlighted the importance of building a fair and sustainable society.
