National Currency SDG 8

5 december, 2025

Objectives:

  1. To provide master’s students with an understanding of the history of the national currency of the Republic of Kazakhstan — the tenge, the reasons for its introduction, and its significance for the state.

  2. To improve economic literacy and promote the development of financial culture.

  3. To foster respect for the tenge as one of the key symbols of an independent state.

Today we will discuss one of the most important values of the Republic of Kazakhstan — the national currency, the tenge. A national currency is a key indicator of a country’s economic sovereignty, financial independence, and political stability. The tenge is one of the important symbols that highlight the development and independence of our nation.

After gaining independence, the young state faced a difficult task — the establishment of its own financial system. As the ruble of the former Soviet Union began to cause economic difficulties, the introduction of a national currency became a necessity of the time.

November 15, 1993, is a remarkable day in the history of Kazakhstan. On this day, by the Decree of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the national currency — the tenge — was put into circulation. Therefore, November 15 is now celebrated as the National Currency Day and the professional holiday of financial sector employees.
