Global Collaboration in Historical Research: Guest Lecture by Ian Campbell

On September 22, 2025, a guest lecture was held by Associate Professor Ian Campbell from the University of California, Davis, dedicated to his book "Knowledge and the Ends of Empire: Kazak Intermediaries and Russian Rule on the Steppe, 1731-1917" within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal No. 17 – "Partnerships for Sustainable Development". This international academic cooperation became a vivid example of strengthening educational ties between Kazakhstan and the USA. Professor Campbell presented the results of his many years of research on the role of Kazakh intermediaries during the period of Russian rule in the steppe.

The lecture attracted the attention of students, faculty, and researchers interested in Central Asian history and colonial studies. During the presentation, issues of interaction between the local population and imperial administration were addressed, as well as the role of knowledge as an instrument of power. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss methodological approaches to studying the history of the Kazakh steppe in the 18th-19th centuries.

This event contributed to the development of international academic dialogue and exchange of experience between researchers from different countries. The guest lecture emphasized the importance of global partnerships in educational and scientific spheres for achieving sustainable development goals. The meeting with the foreign scholar broadened horizons of understanding historical processes and demonstrated the significance of interdisciplinary approaches in contemporary historical science.
