An international event dedicated to gender equality in the scientific field and the expansion of women's participation in research activities was held at al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

The event was held within the framework of the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development (2024-2033) and is timed to coincide with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. During the meeting, the participants discussed modern approaches to ensuring equal access for women to scientific careers, mechanisms for institutional support for researchers, as well as the role of universities in creating an inclusive academic environment.

The plenary session was opened by Aliya Aktymbaeva, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management, who read out a congratulatory letter from Zhanseit Tuimebayev, Chairman of the Board and Rector of AlFarabi Kazakh National University.

"Today, the proportion of female researchers in Kazakhstan is more than 50 percent. 65% of the employees of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University are women. Women at the university have high scientific leadership potential. The women's community occupies a special place in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Scientists actively participate in scientific and innovative projects and make a significant contribution to the improvement of university science",- the letter said.

The meeting participants discussed current trends in ensuring equal access for women to scientific careers, institutional mechanisms for supporting researchers, as well as the role of universities in creating an inclusive academic environment.

During the panel discussion, female researchers presented professional cases, identified key barriers to career growth, and outlined promising areas for the development of women's scientific potential in the region.

An important event of the event was the ceremony of handing over to the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management of KazNU a set of virtual reality equipment "Lifelines of Glaciers", developed within the framework of the GEF-UNDP-UNESCO cryosphere project in Central Asia. The transferred equipment will be used in educational and research activities to demonstrate the role of glaciers in shaping the region's water resources and assess the effects of climate change.

The program concluded with an interactive session with a virtual reality demonstration, including thematic modules on irrigation, hydropower, glacier monitoring and disaster risk reduction, which allowed participants to gain a visual understanding of the relationship between cryospheric processes and sustainable water use in Central Asia.
