Digital Technologies in Religious Studies: An AI-Driven Approach to Strengthening Interfaith Dialogue in Kazakhstan
At Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, a large-scale scientific project is being implemented aimed at developing interfaith dialogue and strengthening national unity. This initiative is particularly relevant in the context of globalization, where maintaining social stability, reinforcing mutual respect and trust, and cultivating a culture of religious tolerance are essential conditions for sustainable state development.
Kazakhstan has historically been a space of coexistence for diverse ethnic groups and religious communities. Alongside Islam and Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and other religious traditions have significantly shaped the country’s cultural landscape. In such a diverse environment, preserving social harmony requires a systematic and scientifically grounded approach. The project carried out by university scholars is designed precisely to address this strategic challenge.
The main objective of the research is to develop a scientific and methodological model for supporting interfaith dialogue through a comprehensive analysis of religious texts and traditions, as well as to create a digital tool that contributes to strengthening national unity. The researchers combine fundamental expertise in religious studies with modern information technologies, developing an artificial intelligence–based algorithm for analyzing religious texts. This algorithm enables structural, semantic, and content-based analysis of sacred writings from various faith traditions.
Within the framework of the study, sacred scriptures and philosophical texts from at least five religious traditions—Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, and Hinduism—are examined comparatively. The primary goal is to identify shared humanistic and ethical principles. Universal values such as the sanctity of human life, justice, compassion, forgiveness, mutual assistance, and the pursuit of peace are common across many religions. Scientifically substantiating these shared moral foundations provides a strong basis for constructive interfaith dialogue.
Another important dimension of the project focuses on examining the role of religion in Kazakhstan’s history and in the formation of national identity. Islam has had a profound influence on the spiritual worldview of the Kazakh people, while Christianity has played a significant role in the cultural development of other ethnic groups within the country. Other religious traditions have also contributed to strengthening social cohesion. The research involves analysis of historical sources, archival materials, and academic literature, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of religion’s place in national consolidation processes.
The empirical component of the study includes surveys, focus groups, and in-depth interviews conducted among representatives of various religious communities. Researchers assess participants’ levels of religious tolerance, their attitudes toward followers of other faiths, and their readiness for interfaith interaction. The collected data are processed using statistical software to ensure scientific reliability. Strict confidentiality standards are maintained, and each participant is assigned a unique identification number.
The practical significance of the project lies in the development of a prototype interactive online platform designed to support interfaith dialogue. The platform will provide tools for knowledge exchange, organization of discussions, and implementation of joint cultural and social initiatives. The artificial intelligence algorithm will systematize religious texts and highlight shared concepts and values, fostering an atmosphere of understanding and cooperation. This approach ensures that scientific findings are translated into practical mechanisms for social engagement.
The effectiveness of the platform will be evaluated using a quasi-experimental method. Participants’ levels of tolerance and their susceptibility to radical views will be measured before and after engagement with the platform. Additionally, comparisons will be made with a control group. This methodology allows for an objective assessment of the model’s social impact based on empirical evidence.
The research methodology is interdisciplinary in nature. The project integrates approaches from religious studies, sociology, political science, information technology, and psychology. Methods include document analysis, comparative research, content analysis, discourse analysis, focus groups, surveys, and in-depth interviews. This comprehensive approach ensures the accuracy and credibility of the findings.
The scientific novelty of the project lies in integrating religious studies scholarship with digital technologies to create a model of interfaith dialogue adapted specifically to the Kazakhstani context. Although interreligious relations have been widely studied globally, the comprehensive implementation of such initiatives through artificial intelligence and a digital platform is being undertaken in Kazakhstan for the first time. This gives the project international relevance and opens new opportunities for global academic collaboration.
As a result of the project, a scientifically grounded model of interfaith dialogue will be developed, along with educational and methodological materials and policy recommendations for governmental and public institutions. Specialized academic courses for undergraduate and graduate students are planned. The research team intends to publish findings in reputable international journals, disseminate results in national publications, and obtain at least two patents. The project also includes the defense of one PhD dissertation within its framework.
The research is scheduled for implementation between 2025 and 2027. By the end of the three-year period, the project is expected to reach Technology Readiness Level 4 (TRL 4), meaning that the platform prototype will be validated in a real-world environment. At this stage, the system’s technical stability, algorithmic accuracy, and social impact will be thoroughly evaluated.
This initiative contributes to strengthening Kazakhstan’s scientific and technological potential, modernizing research in the humanities, and reinforcing interfaith harmony within society. The university’s scholars demonstrate an example of how science and technology can be effectively applied to promote national unity and sustainable development.
In conclusion, the project represents not only an academic endeavor but also a socially significant initiative aimed at fostering a culture of mutual respect, enhancing religious tolerance, and preventing radicalization.
