Central Asia Data Journalism Webinar

On May 5, 2021, a series of webinars began in Central Asia aimed at the quality of education in data journalism. The 19 universities involved in the project will integrate the UNESCO curriculum at webinars on May 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2021. The webinars are organized by the UNESCO Chair for Journalism and Communication of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University with the support of the IPDC Global Initiative on Best Practices in Journalism Education and the UNESCO Almaty Office. 55 journalism universities in Central Asia require UNESCO training programs in journalism education, including 30 universities in Kazakhstan, 10 in Kyrgyzstan, 8 in Tajikistan and 7 in Uzbekistan. In the work of Central Asian journalists, data journalism has become an effective tool for using interactive graphics and visual content.On May 12, at the Central Asian webinar on data journalism in the section "Data processing and visualization tools", among the invited experts, along with Professor Thomas Hanitzsch (Head of the Department of Communication and LMU University of Munich, Germany), E. Gradov (Head of the Work Smart educational program, Central and Eastern Europe, Microsoft, Russia) was invited associate professor, head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data of Al-Farabi KazNU Madina Mansurova Esimkhanovna.Madina Esimkhanovna presented important aspects of data processing tools for effective use in Data Journalism. Presentation topic: Tools for collecting, analyzing and visualizing open data: new opportunities for journalism.

Also on the section "Gathering information from open sources" experts spoke: Ivan Begtin, founder of the autonomous non-profit organization "Infokultura" (Russia), Rakhim Oshakbaev, public figure, journalist (Kazakhstan), Elira Turdybaeva, PhD, President and founder of the Online University ( Kyrgyzstan), Sanatbek Seidekhanov, PhD doctoral student of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Yakutkhon Mamatova, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor of the Department of Journalism at the Mirzo Ulugbek National University (Uzbekistan).

 

 

 

 

The series of webinars will bring together media industry experts to discuss with the departments and faculties of journalism the needs of universities in data journalism curricula in each country. Interviews with national curriculum coordinators and discussions will lead to the development of a data journalism course.
