KazNU develops ecological journalism

At the initiative of the Ministry of Information and Public Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the second advanced training course "Environmental Journalism within the framework of Sustainable Development Goals" has started its work in the Al-Farabi Library.

The event was organized by: the representative office of the UN Department of Global Communications of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Institute of Advanced Training and Additional Education, the Department of Print and Electronic Media and UNESCO for Sustainable Development of the Faculties of Journalism and Geography and Environmental Management.

The purpose of the event is to familiarize media representatives with the issues of the legal and social nature of eco-journalism, environmental safety, and the formation of ecological culture in society and to convey them to the masses. And also learn how to conduct journalistic research in the field of environmental protection based on the experience of such key UN areas as climate change, ecosystem management, efficient use of natural resources, and environmental monitoring projects implemented in Kazakhstan.

At the opening of the course, the head of the Information Bureau of the UN Department of Global Communications, Mr. Vlastimil Samek, said: "The dissemination of environmental information among the population is a great responsibility." A special place in the formation of ecological thinking is occupied by specialized departments. "We express our support for strengthening initiatives aimed at improving environmental qualifications within the framework of the university's Sustainable Development Goals," he said.

Board Member – Vice–Rector for Academic Affairs of Al -Farabi Kazakh National University Lyazzat Yerkinbayeva thanked the participants for supporting environmental journalism initiatives.

During the course, excerpts from documentaries about the environmental situation "Accident in the village of Avat", "Korgalzhyn", filmed by teachers of the Faculty of Journalism, were shown.

According to the program of the second and third days of the course, an ecotour on the campus is planned for journalists, a visit to the Biomuseum and the Green Technology Zone of KazNU, a trip to the Enbekshikazakh district of the Almaty region in order to conduct chemical experiments to determine ions contained in water in the field.
