Combating hunger in the world

12 october, 2023

Students of the 1st and 2nd courses of the specialty "Public Health" of the Faculty of Medicine and Healthcare of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University made a report on the problems of combating hunger in the world, tasks and solutions, discussed and decided to take part in solving this problem to the best of their abilities.

The speaker Musabekova A cited the world statistics of hunger according to the UN.

Almost 690 million people, or 8.9 percent of the world's population, are hungry in the world — an increase of 10 million people in one year and almost 60 million in five years.

The majority of undernourished people in the world — 381 million — live in Asia. More than 250 million people live in Africa, where the number of undernourished is growing faster than anywhere else in the world.

In 2019, almost 750 million people — or almost one in ten people in the world — faced a serious problem of food insecurity.

It is estimated that in 2019, about 2 billion people in the world did not have regular access to safe, nutritious and adequate food.

If trends continue, by 2030 the number of people suffering from hunger will exceed 840 million, or 9.8 percent of the world's population.

In 2019, 144 million children under the age of five suffered from stunting, with three quarters of them living in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2019, 6.9 percent (or 47 million) of children under the age of five suffered from exhaustion or acute malnutrition — a condition caused by limited nutrient intake and infection.

Eliminating hunger can have a beneficial impact on the economy, health and education and promote equality and social development. This is an important condition for building a better future for all people. In addition, hunger limits human development opportunities, which will make it impossible to achieve other Sustainable Development Goals, including those related to education, health and gender equality.

According to the UN, the population of Kazakhstan does not belong to countries suffering from hunger, but there is a category of malnourished, socially vulnerable citizens in need of social support. Taking into account the global problem of fighting hunger, the students decided to perform a number of tasks

To carry out work with the aim of saving basic foodstuffs, to combat wastefulness of products, to work at the local level on the proper storage of products, preventing their spoilage. Comprehensive support of socially vulnerable segments of the population in the place of residence.
