Excursion to the Research Institute within the framework of the project "Decent work and economic growth"

27 october, 2023

In October 2023, an excursion was held for 1st year students studying in the educational program 6B05103-Biotechnology (NIS) and 3rd year students of the educational program 6B05101-Bioengineering to the Institute of Plant Biology and Biotechnology.

As part of the sustainable program of development “Decent Work and Economic Growth,” Institute staff introduced students to promising areas in the field of molecular and cellular biotechnologies. They talked about the current fundamental and commercial projects being implemented at the Institute. Students, in turn, were interested in career opportunities in the field of high biotech and innovations in currently popular “green technologies”. 1st and 3rd year students visited Laboratory of molecular genetics and biology, biotechnology and plant breeding, Laboratory of plant physiology and biochemistry, Laboratory of cryopreservation and clonal propagation, Laboratory of cell engineering.

Leader project researcher at the Laboratory of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Dr. Nurzhanova A.A. told students about new achievements in the field of phytoremediation and about joint international projects with scientists from the Czech Republic. Students learned a lot about the possibilities of using plants to remove pesticides, heavy metals, etc. from soil.

Students examined with interest the collections of rare and endemic plants, saw the process of cultivating them and learned about the stages of cryopreservation of meristem culture under low-temperature preservation in liquid nitrogen.

Students of bioengineers and biotechnologists were especially interested in learning about the research being carried out in the field of cell engineering, since their future profession will be related to this area.

A graduate of the Department of Biotechnology, and currently a researcher at the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Plant Breeding, Zhorabekova Ainash showed bioengineering students how a laboratory model of a bioreactor works. She also showed a collection of virus-free potato microtubers obtained using biotechnological methods.

Thus, students of biotechnology and bioengineering, having visited the laboratories of the Institute of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, learned a lot about their future professions, about innovative directions in the field of biotechnology and bioengineering and about opportunities for career growth in these areas. We got acquainted with advanced scientific projects and with Kazakh scientists implementing these projects.
