Scientific seminar «Applying genetic engineering to solve ecological problems»

18 december, 2023

On 12/18/22/2023, under the guidance of Acting Associate Professor of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Ph.D.Yrgynbaeva Sh. M., a scientific seminar was held with the 3rd year students of educational program “6M05105-Genetics” on the topic "Applying genetic engineering to solve ecological problems". The scientific seminar included Part 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - the main issues of ending hunger, access to food security and healthy nutrition, as well as the development of sustainable agriculture. The aim was to familiarize students with the importance of using genetic engineering in the struggle against environmental problems. The seminar is aimed at discussing and searching for important issues related to achieving sustainable development: ways to solve the big problems facing humanity. In addition, ways of using genetic engineering in the struggle against hunger, ensuring access to adequate and high-quality nutrition were considered.

The participants of the seminar had the opportunity to get acquainted with the basic principles of genetic engineering and promising projects in solving environmental problems. Innovative research in the field of sustainable agriculture, including the creation of genetically modified cultivated plants resistant to the pests and climate change, is considered. During the scientific seminar, students got acquainted with inventions developed through genetic engineering that reduce the negative impact of agriculture on the environment. The seminar participants received ideas for a startup on the issues raised. Besides environmental problems the social and ethical aspects of genetic engineering were also considered.
