KazNU hosted a winter school of sociologists
The Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science hosted an international winter school for young scientists "Sociology and Social Work: Theory and Practice of Research" dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the University and its contribution to the achievement of the SDGs.
Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science, Candidate of Philosophy, Associate Professor Bekzhan Meirbayev and Head of the Department, Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor Gulmira Abdiraiymova took part in the opening of the International School.
The international school included trainings, master classes and presentations on various research areas. Aigul Sadvakasova, Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor, Deputy Director of the Institute of Applied Ethno-Social Studies, presented her experience of scientific internship at a US university. Director of the Public Opinion Research Center, candidate of sociological sciences Gulzhan Alimbekova discussed practical issues of conducting qualitative research in an interactive dialog with the participants.
A special interest of the participants of the winter school was aroused by the speech of Azamat Zhunisbay, a graduate of the department, professor of Pitzer College (Claremont, USA) on the topic "From personal to professional: rethinking identity and research program".
Most of the master classes were presented by the faculty of the Department of Sociology and Social Work. Thus, Professor Mansiya Sadyrova presented the intermediate results of the project on professional choice of schoolchildren, realized within the framework of grant financing of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Young scientists of the department, PhD S.Serikzhanova and M.Shynarbekova shared the results of foreign internship in UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) within the framework of the program of the Center for International Programs "Bolashak" "500 Scientists".
Of particular interest were the reports of doctoral students and recent graduates of the doctoral program, who presented methodological aspects of critical discourse analysis (M. Akmadi, PhD); scientometric data in social sciences (A. Saimasaeva, 2nd year doctoral student), the study of demographic indicators and methods of their calculation (2nd year doctoral student, Master of HSE (Russia) A. Aldangarkyzy.
In their speeches, the participants of the international school noted that sociological practice and social work have been undergoing significant changes over the years of independence, revealing academic, intellectual and research potential.
