XVI Republican Student Subject Olympiad within the framework of the EP “6B04103 - Economics”

XVI Republican Student Subject Olympiad (hereinafter referred to as RSSO) within the framework of the EP “6B04103 - Economics” covering subjects “Economic Theory”, “Microeconomics”, “Macroeconomics”, “Enterprise Economics”

 Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is holding the II stage of the subject Olympiad among students of higher educational institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Olympiad is held in the following subjects: economic theory, microeconomics, macroeconomics, enterprise economics.

The period of the Olympiad is from 16/04/2024 to 24/04/2024.

The main goals of the Olympiad are to develop the professional abilities of students, increase their educational level in the field of economics, identify and support talented students, form the country’s human resources potential, and develop networking between stakeholders in the implementation of the educational program “Economics”.

The objectives of the Olympiad are:

1) stimulation of educational-cognitive and educational-research activities of students;

2) revealing the professional and personal potential of students, their self-awareness, creative abilities, creating conditions for self-realization and self-affirmation;

3) education of the civic position of students;

4) selection and support of the most talented and gifted students;

5) formation of an active professional attitude towards improving the education system.

Students from higher educational institutions enrolled in the educational program 6В04103 - Economics are invited to participate in the RSSO. The sending institution covers the expenses for participation in the Student Olympiad (travel, daily allowances, and accommodation).

Students participate in RSSO events as a team.

The following requirements are imposed on the Olympic participants (participating teams) during the RSSO:

• The maximum team size should not exceed 3 people.

• Full-time students of 2-3 courses are sent to participate in RSSO.

• Number of teams - no more than 2 teams from a higher educational institution.

• The right to nominate candidates for participation in the RSSO is granted to the Academic Council of the university.

The Olympics will be held in 2 stages:

- 1st stage (at a higher educational institution);

- 2nd stage (republican).

Working languages of the Olympiad: Kazakh, Russian English.

Stage 1 of RSSO is conducted among university students. Students take part in individual testing.

The 2nd stage of the national RSSO will be held in the form of offline participation of teams according to approved competitive tasks in order to determine the winners and runners-up (I, II, III places) in the main nominations.

The Republican stage of the RSSO consists of two rounds:

1) first round (external) - selection of participants in the Olympiad based on the results of the essay. Based on the results of the first round, members of the competition commission select teams to participate in the second round. Participants of the competition are required to submit the following documents along with the offered essay to the email address economolymp@mail.ru :

1. A letter signed by the rector (vice-rector) and the protocol of the commission on the results of the first stage of the Olympiad or a decision of the University Scientific Council, issued in written form or in a protocol format;
2. Application for participation in the Olympiad;
3. The essay, which may be presented one of the following thematic directions; A team essay, written according to the requirements.

The team may be refused acceptance of the competitive application and, accordingly, participation in the Olympiad in case of:

• Late submission of the competitive application;
• Non-compliance of the application with the requirements of the Olympiad;
• Incomplete or inaccurate provision of necessary documents;
• Non-compliance of participants with the declared specialty.

Teams are selected for the second round based on the specialty, which have scored the highest number of points according to the corresponding selection criteria and are invited to the second round.

Essays are evaluated based on 5 criteria:

• Relevance of essay content to the topic and specialty direction (20%);
• Topic relevance: substantive and precise problem statement and justification of the theoretical-methodological basis of the essay (25%);
• Scientific style of information presentation, logic, and coherence of material exposition (25%);
• Social significance (20%);
• Originality of the text (plagiarism check) (10%).

2) The second round involves testing the teams that passed the first round and solving applied tasks on specific subjects.

For the test task, 40 minutes will be allocated, and 1 hour for solving the problems. The maximum score for the test is 40 points. The total maximum score for solved problems is 60, including:

• 20 points for the subject "Enterprise Economics";
• 20 points for the subject "Macroeconomics";
• 10 points for the subject "Microeconomics";
• 10 points for the subject "Economic Theory".

When summarizing the results of the final round, the jury considers and adds up all the scores earned by the team at each stage of the second round.

The team of the university whose total score is the highest among other teams is recognized as the winner.

Winners of the Republican Olympiad, occupying 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, are awarded diplomas of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan of the I, II, and III degrees.

• For 1st place - Diploma of the I degree (no more than 1 team);
• For 2nd place - Diploma of the II degree (no more than 2 teams);
• For 3rd place - Diploma of the III degree (no more than 3 teams).

Diplomas are presented at the end of the Olympiad.

Certificates of participation are awarded to all participants of the Republican Student Subject Olympiad.

The organization of the Olympiad is carried out in accordance with the RSSO program.
