Darkhan Akhmed-Zaki was born in 1981 in the East Kazakhstan region. Graduated with honors in 2002 from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University with a degree in applied mathematics and in the same year entered the master's program at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
After graduating with honors from the master's program in November 2004, he entered graduate school at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University. In 2006, he graduated from graduate school and, based on the results of his scientific activities, became a laureate of a state scientific scholarship for scientists and specialists who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of science and technology (or talented young scientists). He defended his candidate's thesis in 2007 on the topic “The influence of temperature effects on oil displacement and electromagnetic sounding of formations” and his doctoral dissertation in 2010 on the topic “Computer modeling of heat and mass transfer processes in a porous medium”, specialty 05.13.18 – mathematical modeling, numerical methods and program complexes.
From 2004 to 2009, he worked as an assistant and teacher at the Department of Computer and Computational Technologies of KazNU named after al-Farabi. From February to September 2009, he worked as deputy dean for educational and methodological work at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of al-Farabi Kazakh National University. From September 2009 to March 10, 2012, he headed the Department of Informatics of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of al-Farabi KazNU.
2012-2013 – Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of KazNU named after al-Farabi.
2013-2016 – Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of KazNU named after al-Farabi.
2016-2017 – Director of the Department of Higher and Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
2017-2020 – President of the University of International Business.
2020-2022 – Rector of Astana IT University.
From 2022 to September 2023 – Chairman of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
