ONGARBAYEV YERDOS KALIMULLAULY

 

Doctor of chemical sciences, professor, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Kazakhstan (2017), laureate of the State Youth Prize “Daryn” of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2002), twice winner of the title “Best University Teacher” (2005, 2022). Awarded the badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Ybyray Altynsarin” (2014).

Yerdos Kalimullauly Ongarbayev was born on May 9, 1976 in the village of Bugun, Ordabasynsky district, South Kazakhstan region. After graduating from the “Sputnik” secondary school with a silver medal in 1992, he entered the Faculty of Chemistry of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. He graduated with honors in 1996 with a bachelor's degree and in 1998 with a master's degree from the Faculty of Chemistry of al-Farabi KazNU in the specialty “chemistry”.

In 2001, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic “Physical and chemical transformations in oil wastes and the development of methods for their disposal” in the specialties of “petrochemistry” and “chemical physics”. In 2010, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Scientific foundations of complex processing of heavy oils, oil residues and wastes” in the specialties of “petrochemistry” and “chemical physics”.

In 1998, he worked as a leading engineer in the department of scientific and technical information of of al-Farabi Kazakh State University. Since 1998 Ongarbayev Y.K. worked as an assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor at the Department of Chemical Physics. In 2005 he received the academic title of “Associate Professor”. In 2017, he received the academic title of “Professor”. Since 2018, he has been working as a professor at the Department of Chemical Physics and Materials Science.

From 2010 to 2018 he worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of al-Farabi KazNU. During the leadership of Ongarbayev Y.K. at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, groups with English language of education were opened for the first time, the name of the faculty was renamed from “chemical” to “Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology”, and the departments of the faculty were restructured. 13 educational programs of the faculty have passed international accreditation by the ASIIN agency (Germany), masters have been trained and a laboratory has been created under the State Program of Industrial-Innovative Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in the specialties of the faculty the university annually took 1st place in the ranking of the IAAR and NKAA agencies, the faculty for 5 for years took 2nd and 3rd places according to the results of the ranking of KazNU faculties.

From 2020 to 2021, he worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Energy and Oil and Gas Industry at the Kazakh-British Technical University. Under his leadership, the educational program “Oil and Gas Engineering” of the faculty was accredited by the KazSEE agency for five years.

Since 2009, he has been  Head of the laboratory of petrochemical processes at the Institute of Combustion Problems.

Ongarbayev Y.K. is a qualified specialist in the field of chemical physics and petrochemistry. The area of his scientific research is related to the processing of heavy oils and oil residues, oil sands, the production and modification of petroleum bitumen. He was the leader and responsible executor of 15 grant projects, under his scientific supervision 1 candidate of sciences and 5 PhDs defended their dissertations. As part of the implementation of scientific projects, he participated in the pilot testing of a pilot plant for processing oil-contaminated soils and laying an experimental road section at the Ozen field. He co-manufactured and tested pilot installations for thermal and ultrasonic extraction of natural bitumen from oil sands of the Republic of Kazakhstan, for demetallization and desulfurization of vacuum residue from the Pavlodar petrochemical plant, for the production and modification of petroleum bitumen by adding crumb rubber. Under his leadership, pilot tests of sorbents based on shungite rocks from the Koksu deposit were carried out for the purification of oil-contaminated soils, 123 tons of an experimental batch of asphalt concrete mixture based on rubber-bitumen binders were prepared, and an experimental section of the road 12 m wide, with a total length of 80 m, was laid on the highway in the Almaty city.

Ongarbayev Y.K. 450 scientific works have been published, including 6 monographs, 10 textbooks, 22 patents and copyright certificates of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 192 articles, 205 materials and abstracts of conference reports. He has 48 publications in the Scopus database, H-index is 9.

In 2002, Ongarbayev Y.K. was awarded the State Youth Prize “Daryn” of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the “Science” nomination. In 2000-2001, 2004-2005, 2008-2010 he became the owner of the State Scientific Scholarship for talented young scientists of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in 2006 and 2022 - the state grant “Best University Teacher”. In 2009, he became the owner of a grant for young scientists from the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan to conduct fundamental scientific research. In 2014, he was awarded the badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Ybyray Altynsarin” for significant success in training and educating the younger generation. In 2017, he was elected a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Higher School of Kazakhstan. In 2022 he was awarded a Certificate of Honor from the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in 2023 - a Certificate of Honor from the Committee for quality assurance in the sphere of science and higher education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

He is the Chairman of the Expert Council of the Committee for Quality Assurance in the Sphere of Science and Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of "Chemical Engineering", Deputy Chairman of the Dissertation Council in the specialty "Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies" and "Chemical Technology of Explosives and Pyrotechnics" at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, expert of the National Center for State Scientific and Technical Expertise, member of the REMS in the specialty “Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies”, deputy editor-in-chief of the journal “Eurasian Chemic-Technological Journal”, member of the editorial board of the scientific journals “Combustion and Plasma Chemistry”, “Chemical and Materials Engineering”.
