On May 02, 2024, the Department of Civil Law and Civil Procedure, Labor Law held a scientific seminar on the topic “The path to sustainable public procurement: strategies and practices”, held within the framework of SDG 12 (12.7 Promote sustainable public procurement practices in accordance with national strategies and priorities).  The speaker of the scientific seminar was first-year master's student D.M. Baimukhanova under the guidance of Doctor of Law, Professor Suleimenova S.Zh.

The seminar participants highlighted that public procurement plays a key role in modern economies, having a significant impact on social, economic and environmental aspects. The transition to sustainable public procurement is becoming an integral part of strategies for the development of public procurement systems, affecting environmental sustainability, social justice and economic development.

However, one of the main strategies for achieving sustainable public procurement is to take environmental criteria into account when choosing suppliers and products. This includes the assessment of the environmental footprint of products, the use of resources and materials, as well as the principles of recycling and disposal. Public procurement can be a means to promote social justice through inclusive practices such as providing opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as compliance with labor laws and employee rights. Sustainable public procurement strategies promote economic development by supporting innovation, developing local economic systems and promoting business competitiveness.

The results of the discussion expressed at the seminar require an integrated approach that includes environmental, social and economic aspects, as well as the implementation of sustainable public procurement requires the development of strategic plans, the introduction of appropriate rules and procedures and staff training. In addition, it is important to ensure transparency and accountability in the procurement process.
