Scientists from Al-Farabi KazNU at the UN Regional Conference in Indonesia

On May 2, 2024, the Second United Nations Tourism Organization Regional Conference on Women's Empowerment in Tourism in Asia and the Pacific opened in Indonesia. This event is attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management A.S. Aktymbaev and PhD, and associate professor G.A. Kulakhmetova. The event, jointly organized by the UN Tourism, the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy and the Bali Polytechnic Tourism Institute, attracted more than a thousand participants, highlighting the key role of women in the tourism sector and promoting gender equality.

At the sectional meeting of the 2nd UN Regional Tourism Conference on women's empowerment in tourism in Asia and the Pacific, Associate Professor Aliya Aktymbayeva, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences, made a keynote speech. Her presentation was devoted to the role and influence of women in the development of tourism in Kazakhstan. The main problems and the presence of women in management apparatuses are revealed. The report aroused considerable interest among conference participants, especially in light of the discussion of successful strategies and programs implemented in Kazakhstan. She shared the experience and practical results of the university’s work in the field of tourism, focusing on the importance of academic research to support sustainable and inclusive tourism, which is directly related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) No. 5 “Gender Equality”; No. 8 “Decent work and economic growth”; No. 17 “Partnership for sustainable development.”

Within the framework of the conference, a working meeting of the KazNU delegation with representatives of the UN Tourism and JSC “NC “Kazakh Tourism”” was held, where issues of holding the 2nd International Forum in Almaty on the basis of KazNU with the support of the UN Tourism dedicated to the celebration of the 90th anniversary of anniversary of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. These negotiations mark a significant step forward in strengthening cooperation between Kazakhstan and international organizations in the field of tourism and highlight the university's leadership role in regional tourism education and research.

The issue of holding the 1st UN World Tourism Conference on expanding the role and place of women in the hospitality industry in 2025 was also discussed, where KazNU will act as a co-organizer. This event will give impetus to the sustainable positioning of Kazakhstan and KazNU in the international tourism market. This event confirms Kazakhstan’s desire to actively participate in international projects and contribute to the global movement to improve the status of women in the tourism industry, and also expands opportunities for the exchange of knowledge and experience in the international arena.

During the conference, a fruitful meeting between Dean Aliya Aktymbayeva and the Amadeus team, the world leader in the field of booking and reservations in the hospitality industry, took place. At the meeting, key aspects of cooperation between KazNU and the Amadeus company were presented, aimed at improving educational programs and training students in the EP “Tourism” and “Restaurant and Hospitality Business”, to strengthen the practice-oriented approach in the educational process. The parties came to an agreement on cooperation.

As part of the conference, Aliya Aktymbayeva held a number of meetings with representatives of the UN on tourism, representatives of Myanmar, World Tourism, discussing the possibility of organizing an international forum on the basis of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in honor of the 90th anniversary of the university, November 21-23, 2024.
