Semifinal of chess tournament ‘Senat Open Cup 2024’ took place in KazNU
The semifinal of the chess tournament ‘Senat Open Cup 2024’ was held at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The event was attended by Maslikhat deputies, members of the regional and city public council and media representatives.
More than 100 players from Almaty, Zhetysu, Abay, Almaty and East Kazakhstan regions competed in the tournament.
‘Chess has been developing dynamically in Kazakhstan in recent years. The state pays great attention to this type of game. Chess tournament ‘Senat Open Cup 2024’ is held for the first time in the country. In the future, we plan to hold this event traditionally’, - said the Chairman of Almaty City Maslikhat Meirzhan Otynshiev.
Deputy Chairman of the Board - First Vice-Rector of KazNU Yerkin Duisenov made a speech at the opening of the tournament, wishing the tournament participants good luck.
‘Chess is an intellectual game that develops brain work and improves thinking. The head of state Kasym-Jomart Tokayev instructed to open special centres for the development of chess sport. This is a huge opportunity for young people. Therefore, I would like to say that Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is always ready to jointly organise such social and sporting events,’ the Vice-Rector said.
The top 25 players of the semi-finals will compete in the Senat Open Cup 2024 final to be held at the end of August.
In addition, on the eve of the 5th World Nomad Games, a togyzkumalak competition dedicated to the Abay Award was held.
