The ‘Week of Languages’ started in KazNU
Al-Farabi Kazakh National University has launched a week of languages, timed to coincide with the Day of Languages of the People of Kazakhstan. This year more than 35 events are planned to be held within the framework of the week.
The aim is to form a sense of respect for the Kazakh language among representatives of other nationalities living in Kazakhstan, to increase interest in the state language among the youth, and to raise the status of the state language.
During the week there will be held various conferences, leadership lectures of scientists - Turkologists, philologists, open curatorial lessons, informative spiritual and cultural events. An excursion to the house-museum of the teacher of the nation Akhmet Baitursynov will be organised for students.
With the participation of famous linguists will be discussed issues of creating artificial intelligence in the Kazakh language, record keeping in the state language, uploading Kazakh content of the university in the Google database.
In addition, scientists from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University have won a mega-grant for 3 billion tenge on the topic ‘Creation of a Large Language Model (LLM) to support the Kazakh language and technological progress’.
The main goal of the project is to collect and analyse a corpus of data for LLM training, develop the architecture and optimise the performance of the LLM model, and integrate the developed language model into various systems and platforms.
This megaproject is implemented jointly with specialists of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Nazarbayev University, Akhmet Baitursynov Institute of Linguistics, Sh.Shayakhmetov National Scientific and Practical Centre ‘Til - Kazyna’, Institute of Information and Computing Technologies. Scientists will conduct research and detailed analysis of the peculiarities of adapting existing architectures of language models to the Kazakh language, taking into account phonetic-phonological, morphological, word-formation, prosodic-intonation, syntactic and lexical features of the language.
