Two-day international training for forecasters on satellite meteorological data and applications WMO-CIMSS Forecaster Training on Satellite Meteorology Data and Applications started in Al-Farabi KazNU.

The event is organised by the Department of Geography and Environmental Management in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Research (CIMSI).

The training aims to provide comprehensive information on the use of satellite data for meteorological purposes. It will include laboratory exercises so that forecasters can gain practical experience with products based on real data.

The training is attended by representatives of the World Meteorological Organisation, young scientists and students from Al-Farabi KazNU and leading universities in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The classes are led by Tim Wagner, a researcher from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA, and Natalia Donokhova, Head of the Space Systems and Applications Division of the World Meteorological Organisation.

On the first day of the training the participants were immersed in satellite meteorology, studying the following topics: electromagnetic spectrum, visible microwave IR channels, geostationary and polar orbits, geostationary satellites Meteosat 8, Meteosat 11, Himawari 8, Himawari 9, polar-orbiting satellites JPSS, MetOp and others. This was followed by a practical session on introduction to SSEC RealEarth. The afternoon session was devoted to the study of clouds, precipitation, fire science.

During the second day, the training participants will study hydrology, addressing the current topics of floods, floods, flood detection from satellites and others.

‘We are very grateful to KazNU for the invitation. And to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for providing a trainer and a lecturer who is here and talks about everything that is directly related to natural disasters such as floods, fires,’ shared Natalia Donokhova. - You have young specialists who inspire us to work in meteorology, it is interesting for us to work with them. We have brought good weather here. I am impressed that KazNU has more than 26,000 students. It is a very large university’.

The participants of the training also spoke about their impressions and training. Tatiana Dabisha came from the Republic of Moldova. ‘This is my first time in Kazakhstan and I am very grateful to the organisers for the opportunity to attend such a training. The course is very interesting. It is just the kind of information that we will be able to apply in practice to improve the quality of work. I really liked the city and friendly people. I am delighted with your large campus. It's very beautiful, modernised and cool!’

Amina Toishimanova, a forecaster engineer at Kazgidromet, graduated from KazNU and now works in her speciality. ‘Since graduation, many innovations have been introduced in our field. And this training is very relevant and necessary. Not only Kazakhstani, but also professionals from abroad take part in it. We work out many topics very intensively, acquire important knowledge and skills. I thank the organisers for giving us this rare opportunity.

The international training will facilitate the development of new links, exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of Earth Science.
