Unipolar or Multipolar World: Students' Perspective

27 february, 2025

What should the global system be unipolar or multipolar? This question is becoming increasingly relevant in the context of a rapidly changing geopolitical environment. The  first-year students of the Faculty of International Relations at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University discussed this very topic as part of their group projects in Russian language classes.
The discussion was conducted in an open dialogue format, where  the students not only presented arguments in favor of one world order model or another but also demonstrated their language skills acquired during the learning process. The complexity of the issue lies in the fact that a unipolar system, where one state dominates, offers stability but simultaneously limits opportunities for equal interaction between nations. On the other hand, a multipolar world implies the existence of several centers of power, which expands diplomatic and economic prospects but also entails risks of competition and conflicts.
Young researchers relied on historical examples, analyzed modern trends in international relations, and presented arguments from the fields of diplomacy, economics, and international law. Their work demonstrated that the new generation of political scientists approaches world order with depth and analytical insight.
Such discussions not only help the  students develop critical thinking but also shape their ability to articulate their viewpoints convincingly. They learn not just to reproduce theoretical knowledge but to apply it in practice, understanding the complexity and multilayered nature of global processes.
Ultimately, the question of what the global system should be remains open. However, one thing is clear: in the future, decisions will be made by those who are already contemplating global challenges today and are prepared for constructive dialogue.
