Conservation of marine biodiversity: genetic adaptation and evolutionary dynamics

28 march, 2025

On March 28, 2025, Amina Kistaubayeva, the  first-year master's degree  student in Foreign Philology, conducted an educational session on the topic:  «Сonservation of marine biodiversity: genetic adaptation and evolutionary dynamics» for  the third-year students of Foreign Philology major  as a  part of her pedagogical practice within the framework of SDG 14: Conservation of Marine Ecosystems. The organised educational event  was conducted under the supervision of A.S. Aitmukhanbetova,  the senior lecturer of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation studies.

During the session,  the students exchanged opinions and shared their thoughts on marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and their genetic and evolutionary development. The main objective of the educational session was to provide the  students with valuable and useful information on marine biodiversity, research findings, and pressing ecological issues affecting marine life today. Through discussion,  the students identified the key causes of current environmental problems. Additionally, a «brainstorming» method was employed, focusing on the following questions:

  1. What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear «marine biodiversity»?
  2. How do you think climate change affects marine biodiversity?
  3. Have you heard of any conservation measures aimed at protecting marine life?

While answering these questions,  the students showed a keen interest in the topic and actively participated in discussions. After familiarizing themselves with the key information,  the students were divided into groups with the help of «wordwall» online platform and explored the topic in a cluster format. Each group presented their goals and research findings, offering innovative and valuable insights. The first group analyzed the impact of environmental problems on marine ecosystems. The second group presented the best strategies for preserving marine biodiversity. The third group highlighted the significance of genetic development for marine biodiversity.

In conclusion, students freely expressed their opinions and noted that they had gained useful knowledge. The topic and the questions discussed during the session were well received by the students. The event was conducted entirely in English.
