KazNU held the event “Combating Desertification and Restoring Degraded Lands” within SDG 15
On April 2, 2025, the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted the event “Combating Desertification and Restoring Lands Affected by Drought, Desertification, and Floods,” dedicated to Sustainable Development Goal 15 - “Life on Land.” The event aimed to develop students’ awareness of the importance of protecting natural ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, and restoring degraded lands, as well as fostering environmental thinking and responsibility for the sustainable use of natural resources.
The event partner was Dinara Issayeva, PhD doctoral student and researcher at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of Akhmet Baitursynuly Kostanay Regional University, who participated online as an invited expert.
The program included the following activities:
- an interactive lecture and analytical discussion addressing global and regional environmental challenges, including land degradation, desertification, droughts, floods, and biodiversity loss;
- an online presentation titled “The Impact of Pyrogenic Factors on Forest Ecosystems and Their Restoration,” presenting current scientific data on the consequences of forest fires and ecosystem recovery processes;
- a discussion on the role of scientific research and educational institutions in the implementation of SDG 15 and the development of sustainable environmental solutions.
The event brought together representatives of the academic community and students:
- students of the Neuroscience educational program - 8 participants;
- KazNU faculty members - 2 participants;
- external expert - 1 participant.
The event contributed to the development of environmental responsibility among participants, fostering a conscious attitude toward the environment and an understanding of the role of individual contribution in preserving and restoring terrestrial ecosystems. Participants expanded their knowledge of SDG 15 and current environmental issues, while the faculty strengthened interuniversity and scientific cooperation, reaffirming the university’s commitment to sustainable development principles.
