On May 20, 2025, the Regional Info Day of Horizon Europe Cluster 5 was held at Satbayev University (Almaty). The event was organized by the SECCA project funded by the European Union, with the support of Science Fund JSC and in collaboration with universities of Kazakhstan. The event aimed to strengthen research and innovation cooperation between the European Union and the countries of Central Asia.

The Faculty of Physics and Technology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was represented by the Vice Dean for Research and International Cooperation, who spoke during the pitch session for universities, presenting the faculty’s scientific potential, key research directions, and readiness to join international consortia within the Horizon Europe program.

In her presentation, the speaker focused on current and prospective topics within Cluster 5: Climate, Energy, and Mobility, including:

  • sustainable and smart energy systems;

  • development of new nanomaterials for green technologies;

  • digitalization in energy and industrial infrastructure;

  • strengthening research competencies in nuclear, fusion, and renewable energy.

Horizon Europe is the EU’s largest flagship research and innovation program with a total budget of €95.5 billion. During the event, participants received practical guidance on application procedures, partner search, and utilizing the network of national contact points. Presentations were delivered by experts from the European Commission and national contact points for Cluster 5 from both the EU and Central Asian countries.

Participation of the Faculty of Physics and Technology in this international forum reflects KazNU’s strong commitment to integration into the global scientific community and the expansion of international cooperation.

The event also contributed to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 9 – Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation;

  • SDG 17 – Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

The Faculty of Physics and Technology continues to actively advance international initiatives, reinforcing the university’s position as a leading scientific and educational hub in Central Asia, open to strategic partnerships and cross-border cooperation within EU global programs.
