Participation of the UNESCO Chair Faculty on Sustainable Development in the National Inception Meeting on the Update of the NIP on POPs
On June 4, 2025, in Astana at the Hilton Garden Inn hotel, JSC “Zhasyl Damu” with the support of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the international partner — the Regional Centre of the Stockholm Convention RECETOX (Brno, Czech Republic), is holding a National Inception Meeting within the framework of the implementation of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) project entitled: “Review and Update of the National Implementation Plan (NIP) for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Albania, Armenia, and Kazakhstan” (hereinafter referred to as the Project).
The Project aims to support the Republic of Kazakhstan in fulfilling its international obligations by updating the National Implementation Plan in accordance with Article 7 of the Stockholm Convention.
The Project will contribute to updating the Waste Cadastre data, including data on POPs, and incorporating new information that covers the entire territory of the republic. An important aspect of the Project is the development of Action Plans for the safe handling, collection, storage, and destruction of POPs, with a special focus on polychlorinated and polybrominated diphenyls.
The updated National Implementation Plan will allow for more effective coordination of activities among POPs waste holders and improve the national system for monitoring and controlling the impact of POPs on public health and the environment.
As part of the Project, three national meetings are planned to raise awareness among stakeholders (government authorities, enterprises, NGOs, associations) about the update of the National Implementation Plan under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
