Our university recently hosted a round table discussion dedicated to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13: "Climate Action." The event was organized by English language instructors and brought together first-year undergraduate students from the Faculty of Biology.
A round table academic discussion devoted to UN SDG 13 “Climate Action” was organized by English language instructors and brought together first-year undergraduate students from the Faculty of Biology allowing students not only to deepen their understanding of global environmental challenges but also to practice their English skills. Key concepts such as "carbon footprint," "global warming," and "sustainable development" were explored, enriching both their scientific and linguistic knowledge. In their presentations biology students spoke about the causes of smog on Almaty (Gulnaz Karzhaubay), the problem of water shortage(Vladislav Ivanov), environmental situation in Kazakhstan(Anton Dudnik, Yussupzhan Alisher), environmental problems in Kazakhstan (Ilnur Tairov, Alua Barmanbekova).
The event fostered a warm and productive atmosphere. Participants demonstrated not only their interest in tackling environmental problems but also their dedication to self-improvement and mastering professional English terminology. It was inspiring to see students enthusiastically asking questions, sharing personal observations, and brainstorming ways to make their studies and daily lives more eco-friendly.
It is worth noting that such initiatives nurture global thinking and raise a generation of conscious youth ready to contribute to a sustainable future. The round table became a significant step in merging scientific and linguistic education, reinforcing the idea that a modern specialist is someone well-versed in their field and capable of communicating on the global scientific stage. Events like this strengthen both the academic competencies of students and their sense of responsibility for the planet’s future, encouraging them to take action here and now.
