2 october, 2025

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 (France) have signed an agreement to implement a joint educational programme offering two degrees in the field of ‘7M07101 – Petrochemistry’.

The cooperation is aimed not only at training highly qualified personnel in the field of petrochemistry, but also at integrating educational programmes with the principles of sustainable development. The implementation of the programme is in line with the key UN Sustainable Development Goals, including:

• SDG 4 ‘Quality Education’ – providing students with access to international-level knowledge and innovative teaching practices.

• SDG 8 ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’ – training specialists who are in demand in high-tech industries.

• SDG 9 ‘Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure’ – promoting the development of scientific research and the introduction of advanced technologies in the petrochemical industry.

• SDG 17 ‘Partnerships for the Goals’ – strengthening academic and scientific ties between Kazakhstan and France.

The dual degree programme provides students with training in both countries, participation in research projects, access to modern laboratories and the opportunity to undertake international internships. This will enable graduates to become a new generation of specialists capable of implementing innovative solutions in industry, taking into account the principles of sustainable development.

The programme will be implemented at the Department of Physical Chemistry, Catalysis and Petrochemistry.

The programme will be implemented at the Department of Physical Chemistry, Catalysis and Petrochemistry.

The signed agreement strengthens the strategic partnership between the leading universities of the two countries and opens a new stage of cooperation in the field of education and science. The new programme provides master's students with the opportunity to simultaneously gain academic experience at two prestigious universities and enhance their knowledge in an international scientific environment.

As part of the programme, students will be able to undertake internships in modern laboratories, participate in joint scientific projects and work with foreign professors. Such opportunities increase the professional competitiveness of young scientists and contribute to their development as sought-after world-class specialists.

For KazNU, this is a historic step – a concrete result of the university's international cooperation strategy, as well as an important example of the integration of Kazakhstan's education system into the global educational space.
