The SRI NCTM was organized on April 13, 1992, by decision №4 of the Cabinet of Ministers. In accordance with the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated September 6, 2002 No. 984 “Issues of the Republican State Enterprise “Al-Farabi Kazakh National University” of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan” was reorganized into a subsidiary state enterprise “Scientific Research Institute for New Chemical Technologies and Materials” of the Republican State Enterprise “Al-Farabi Kazakh National University” of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The main activity of the Institute is the development of theoretical and practical foundations for new environmentally friendly chemical technologies and materials in Kazakhstan.
The director of the institute from foundation to 2009 was the academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, laureate of the Order of "Kurmet" Zhubanov Kair Akhmetovich. Since 2010, Sergey Nikolaevich Kalugin, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, has been appointed acting director of SSE SRI NCTM.
The high scientific potential of the institute made it possible to form, substantiate and win a tender for the implementation of three Republican targeted scientific and technical programs, three programs of fundamental research in which SRI NCTM was recognized as the parent organization by a decree of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In the light of integration with university science at SRI NCTM, bachelors and masters of the Faculty of Chemistry of Al-Farabi KazNU carried out and successfully defended term papers and theses based on research materials carried out within the framework of the programs.
