The Institute of Asian Studies (IAI) is a research scientific unit designed to unite all existing and newly formed scientific centers of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Currently, the Oriental studies of Kazakhstan is focused mainly on the study of the Arab East, China, India, Afghanistan and Korea. The area of scientific research should be expanded to include the countries of South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast and Northeast Asia.The IAI will be developed in stages. At the first stage, all existing centers will be preserved, and in the future it will be restructured, either on a regional basis, or according to current problems and trends. IAI assumes coverage of all regions of Asia. The legal status of the Institute of Asian Studies will change as it develops. The IAI has its own seal and letterhead.
The Institute plans to unite all scientific centers into one independent research organization.
The Institute sets its tasks to develop the main directions of scientific activity:
1. Kazakhstan in the system of regional and bilateral relations with Asian countries
2. Central Asia and the context of modern Eurasia
3. Current socio-political problems of the Asian continent and its regions
4. Asian countries in migration processes and Asian diasporas
IAI sets the task of publishing an electronic scientific journal "Topical issues of modern Asia"
IAI will prepare for publication educational, popular and scientific literature on Asian countries: dictionaries of frequency vocabulary, phrasebooks, a series of books "Asian Countries", etc.
IAI will develop cooperation with other scientific institutions in order to gain fame and appreciation in Kazakhstan and abroad.
