HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
In accordance with the government decree on the development of applied mathematics, the specialty "Applied Mathematics" and the department of the same name were established at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in 1972. The first head of the department was Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, and Academician of the National Academy of Sciences, Alexey Timofeevich Lukyanov. A significant contribution to the successful development of the new specialty was made by Academicians O.M. Sultangazin, G.O. Rosenfeld, S.Ä. Aisagaliev, S.A. Atanbayev, and other teaching professors. The "Applied Mathematics" specialty requires in-depth knowledge in areas such as differential equations and mathematical physics, computational mathematics, control theory, and programming on electronic computing devices.
That same year, for the first time in the history of higher educational institutions of Kazakhstan, graduates in the specialty "Applied Mathematics" completed their studies. Among them were Nargozy Tursunbayuly Danaev and Toleukhan Nuraldauly Biyarov.
In the 1970s, four departments operated at Kazakh State University in the field of "Applied Mathematics": "Applied Mathematics" - headed by A.T. Lukyanov Alexey Timofeevich, "Applied Analysis" - headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Kulzhabay Abdykhalykuly Kasymov, "Mathematical Support of Electronic Computing Machines" - headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Mikhail Abramovich Taitslyn, and "Mathematical Support of Automated Control Systems" - headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Serikbay Abdigaliyevich Aisagaliev. These four departments trained specialists in various areas of applied mathematics. Graduates were capable of working in all sectors of the our country's economy.
At that time, there were frequent discussions about talented mathematicians Shaltay Smagululy and Nargozy Tursunbayuly. During those years, Shaltay Smagululy worked as a research fellow at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk. His scientific advisor was the renowned scientist Boris Grigoryevich Kuznetsov. The institute was headed by the famous academician and mathematician Nikolai Nikolaevich Yanenko. In this same institute, our esteemed scientist and teacher Nargozy Tursunbayuly Danaev was a graduate student and rese arch fellow, with Academician N.N. Yanenko himself as his scientific advisor. Even in those years, the young Shaltay Smagululy and Nargozy Tursunbayuly gained recognition from many outstanding scientists and mathematicians due to their talent, knowledge, and strong character.
Many Kazakhstani scientists underwent scientific internships and postgraduate studies in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk. Among them, O.M. Sultangazin, S.A. Atanbayev, Sh.S. Smagulov, N.T. Danaev, and S.A. Badaev are especially noteworthy.
Kazakhstani mathematicians remember with great respect the era of Academician N.N. Yanenko in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk. He provided significant assistance to Kazakhstan in training scientific personnel.
The history of training highly qualified mathematicians originates with Khasen Ibrashevich Ibrashev, who served as the dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Kazakh State University from 1957 to 1970. He established agreements for training scientific personnel with the three mathematical centers of the Soviet Union - Leningrad, Moscow, and Novosibirsk. At that time, Novosibirsk, as a newly established center, had extensive opportunities. From this period onward, mathematics began to develop actively in Kazakhstan. These years became a period of mathematical prosperity with the support of great mathematicians such as Academician N.N. Yanenko and Academician G.I. Marchuk. This scientific collaboration continues to this day.
The "Computational Mathematics" department, established at that time, deserves special mention. The first head of the department was Professor Y.G. Zolotarev. Subsequent department heads included Professor K.A. Kasymov, Professor O.M. Sultangazin, Professor K.E. Sarbasov, Professor S.E. Temirbolatov, Professor S.A. Atanbayev, and Professor Sh.S. Smagulov. The last head of the department, appointed in 2001, was Professor K.K. Shakenov, who served in this role until the department's dissolution in 2011. Each department head made significant contributions to the department's development. The most notable contribution was made by Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, laureate of the USSR State Prize in the field of science and technology, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Omirzak Makhmutovich Sultangazin.
Currently, the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics and the Faculty of Information Technology at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University are rapidly developing. This growth is directly linked to advancements in computing technology. The academic programs of these faculties are based on applied mathematics and modern information and communication technologies. In this regard, in 2020, the "Computational Sciences and Statistics" department was established at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. This department offers courses in computational sciences and their applications, probability theory, mathematical statistics, stochastic processes, and their applications.
The establishment of the "Computational Sciences and Statistics" department is associated with the growing relevance of rapidly developing computational sciences, probability theory, and mathematical statistics. This issue was discussed at a meeting of the scientific council of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics and was unanimously supported by the university's scientific council. This initiative is closely linked to the name of the dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Professor D.B. Zhakeybaev. The first head of the newly established "Computational Sciences and Statistics" department in 2020-2021 was PhD Dr. Turar Olzhas Nurkonysovich, and since 2021, the department has been led by PhD Dr., Associate Professor A.N. Temirbekov.
