ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF MODERN CITIES
At Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, senior lecturers of the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Philology organised an international educational event titled "Environmental Challenges of Large Cities." This event, held in collaboration with the first-year students of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, focused on Sustainable Development Goal 11: “Sustainable Cities and Communities.”
The event was conducted in both English and Kazakh. During the discussions, students explored the environmental issues facing major cities worldwide, including those in Kazakhstan. In addition to the first-year students of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, students studying abroad also participated in the online event.
Botagoz Nygmetovna Bekmasheva, a senior lecturer of the Department of Foreign Languages, opened the event by wishing the students success and highlighting the relevance of the topic. Alisher Baktygaliev addressed environmental issues in France and specifically Paris, while Erkinbek Zhadyra discussed similar problems in Guangzhou, People's Republic of China.
Ablek Dinmuhammed, a first-year student of the speciality of Computer Science and Statistics, gave a meaningful presentation in English titled "Problems of Large Cities: Almaty." Mereke Zakaria, another first-year student in the Mathematics speciality, shared his insights on "Environmental Issues: Astana." Mukamedy Nursaya, a first-year student of the speciality of Actuarial Mathematics, impressed the audience with her poem in English, "Natural Disasters." Additionally, Rakhatuly Alinur, also a first-year student of the speciality of Computer Science and Statistics, fascinated attendees with his English monologue on "Environmental Issues of Large Cities."
Yerlan Elina and Nurbay Ulpa, first-year students from China specialising in Computer Science and Statistics presented their informative paper on "Environmental Issues in Beijing." The students also recited proverbs about nature and ecology in both English and Kazakh. Other participants included Almat Adilbayev (AKM), Abdykhalyk Sagyndyk (AKM), Abylai Alzhanbay (EGG), Aruzhan Talip (EGG), Aliya Mirzadulet (AKM), Aruzhan Olzhabay (AKM), and Dastan Kozhakhmet (AKM).
The event was moderated by Ablek Dinmukhamed (EGG) and Aisha Muratova (KM), who discussed global environmental issues as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals. They engaged students with thought-provoking questions, shared interesting information, and maintained high engagement throughout the event.
At the end of the event, Zhubanova Kulyash Khorezmovna, a senior lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Philology, made a speech, saying that the event was held at a very high level, and expressed her appreciation to the students for their participation.
