25 Years of the Kazakhstan Academy of Journalism

7 january, 2026

SDG-16 This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Kazakhstan Academy of Journalism. It is worth recalling that the Academy was established in June 2001 as a national public association with the aim of uniting the country’s media community. Since then, the Academy has passed through many significant stages in its development.

The Academy of Journalism has established an annual tradition of reviewing and analyzing the most notable events and achievements in the information sphere. This year, the tradition was continued.

Under the leadership of the Academy’s President, Professor Sagymbay Kabashuly, the main trends of the year were identified as follows:
the ethics of using artificial intelligence in the media sector and its impact on information quality;
regional media — the level of digitalization of regional and district newspapers and online portals;
independent media — new market players and the development of the podcast industry.

Each year, the Academy’s membership is expanded with new members. Over the years, prominent journalists, media managers, and scholars engaged in media research have joined the Academy.

At various times, distinguished figures from Kazakhstan’s culture, politics, and media sectors have been admitted to the Academy. Among them are public figure and poet Olzhas Suleimenov, media managers Erlan Bekkhozhin, Chairman of the Journalists’ Union Seitkazy Mataev, Valery Zhandauletov, State Prize laureate and poet Ulykbek Esdaulet, poet and journalist Bakhytzhan Kanapiyanov, Editor-in-Chief of Novoe Pokolenie newspaper Sergey Aparin, media manager Serik Zhanbolat, Director of Qonayev Media holding Kymbat Khangeldina, TV journalist and producer Dana Ormanbayeva, Editor-in-Chief of Mysl magazine Asyl Sagymbekov, and Director of Alatau Aqparat media holding Erzhan Tolek.
