SDG 14: Life Below Water

5 december, 2025

On December 5, 2025, at 3:00 PM, Roman Menzhulin, the  first-year doctoral student majoring in Russian Philology, held an environmental meeting with first-year students majoring in Two Foreign Languages.

The event was led by Gulzhan Bolatova, Doctor of Philology and Professor.

The goal of the meeting was to continue to foster respect for water resources and marine ecosystems among students. Despite the fact that the Republic of Kazakhstan and the city of Almaty are located far from the ocean, water resource issues directly affect each of us - after all, preserving clean water and ecosystems on land and at sea begins with local rivers and streams.

By completing a questionnaire, viewing a thematic presentation, creating a mind map, and watching videos, the students learned about the marine ecosystem, its threats, and why they are relevant even for landlocked regions.

The students learned about the results of a study conducted by Almaty Technological University (2024), where scientists studied the water quality of Almaty rivers and identified pressing issues, as well as outlined solutions.

After the teamwork, they discussed the scientists' proposals and, most importantly, identified what we could do ourselves: from reducing household waste and participating in environmental campaigns to developing projects to monitor the condition of local rivers.
