The Horse Phenomenon in Turkic Culture: A Scientific Seminar Held
On February 19, 2026, a scientific seminar titled “The Tradition of Horse Burial” was held at the Department of Turkology and the History of Eastern Countries of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, with the participation of the renowned scholar, Professor Savaş Şahin from the Republic of Türkiye.

The main objective of the seminar was to provide a scholarly analysis of the place and significance of the horse in the life of nomadic societies, as well as its role in beliefs, worldview, and concepts of the afterlife. During the event, the horse was examined not only as an economic asset but also as an important symbol of the spiritual culture of the Turkic peoples.
In his presentation, Professor Savaş Şahin focused on the archaeological and historical significance of burial mounds where horses were interred together with humans, complete with specially prepared saddles and equipment. He emphasized that burial traditions and sacrificial rituals associated with horses are common among Turkic peoples. It was particularly highlighted that these traditions demonstrate close historical and cultural ties and the formation of a shared worldview among Turkic nations.

Faculty members and students actively participated in the seminar, engaging in a meaningful discussion on the topic. Participants shared their views on the continuity of traditional culture in modern society and the importance of instilling these values in the younger generation.

This scientific meeting made a significant contribution to strengthening academic cooperation in the field of Oriental Studies, promoting international exchange of experience, and enhancing the university’s academic reputation.
