Active Processes in Contemporary Urban Language: Realization of the Ecolinguistic Potential
At Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, a research project titled “Active Processes in Contemporary Urban Language: Realization of the Ecolinguistic Potential” is being implemented. The study is carried out by the university’s scholars within the framework of the priority scientific development area “Intellectual Potential of the Country” and is aimed at a comprehensive investigation of linguistic transformations under conditions of modern urbanization.
Contemporary language functions not only as a means of communication but also as a reflection of social, cultural, and psychological processes. These changes manifest themselves most vividly in the urban environment, where intensive migration flows, information technologies, media influence, and various forms of intercultural interaction are concentrated. The city becomes a dynamic platform for the formation of new linguistic practices, transformation of norms, and emergence of innovative language units.
The goal of the project is to identify active linguistic processes in contemporary urban language through the application of an ecolinguistic approach and to determine their positive and negative tendencies. The research focuses on analyzing the influence of social, political, and cultural factors on vocabulary, stylistic structure, and semantic processes within the language of the city.
The city represents a space where various ethnic and social groups intersect. As a result, a multilingual and multidialectal environment is formed, characterized by intensive processes of lexical borrowing, semantic expansion and narrowing of meanings, and the activation of word-formation models. At the same time, other tendencies are observed, including the blurring of traditional norms, increased cliché usage, excessive use of abbreviations, and the intensification of slang and colloquial vocabulary. These phenomena require not subjective evaluation, but objective scientific analysis within the framework of ecolinguistics.
The research covers major cities of Kazakhstan. Empirical data are collected through surveys, audio and video recordings of spoken speech, and observation of everyday communication practices. Written material is analyzed based on advertising texts, urban signage, names of public and commercial objects, and media content. The collected data undergo descriptive, comparative, and statistical analysis, enabling the identification of systemic patterns of linguistic change.
Particular attention is paid to changes in vocabulary and phraseology, processes of neoderivation and appropriation, transformations of morphological categories, and the interaction between analytic and synthetic forms. The study examines syntactic features of urban spoken discourse, the phenomenon of language play, the influence of internet communication on both oral and written forms of language, and the reflection of cultural processes within the lexical-semantic system.
The ecolinguistic approach involves viewing language as a self-regulating system functioning in interaction with the social environment. Within the project, linguistic changes are analyzed not from the perspective of “correct versus incorrect,” but in terms of their functional and pragmatic relevance and their impact on the stability of the language system. The focus is placed on maintaining a balance between the internal laws of language development and external social stimuli.
One of the key outcomes of the project will be the creation of an online thesaurus titled “Word of the Year of the Kazakh Language.” This descriptive information-retrieval resource will enable users to search for words according to their meanings and contextual characteristics, document the dynamics of their usage, and track their semantic evolution. The platform will be valuable both for the academic community and for a broad audience interested in the contemporary state of the language.
The research results are planned to be published in international peer-reviewed journals indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, as well as presented at scientific seminars and round tables held at the university. This will contribute to expanding academic discussion and integrating the obtained findings into the international scientific context.
The social significance of the project lies in the development of recommendations aimed at strengthening language culture and improving the quality of speech communication. The study promotes awareness of ongoing linguistic changes and fosters a responsible attitude toward speech practices. Its economic effect is associated with the potential creation of scientific schools and language monitoring centers capable of systematically analyzing and forecasting the dynamics of the linguistic environment.
In the context of globalization and the expansion of the information space, the risk of erosion of the national language increases. Therefore, scientific reflection on processes occurring within the urban linguistic environment becomes a strategically important task. The research conducted by scholars of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University aims to identify patterns of linguistic evolution and assess the ecolinguistic condition of urban communication.
Urban language is a living organism reflecting the pace and direction of social development. Its study makes it possible to better understand mechanisms of linguistic adaptation to contemporary conditions and to determine ways of preserving the functional and cultural value of language. The implementation of this project constitutes an important contribution to the development of national linguistic science and to the strengthening of the country’s intellectual potential.
