Anniversary of the Outstanding Kazakh Ichthyologist Nadir Mamilov
On February 22, 2026, the renowned Kazakh ichthyologist, Candidate of Biological Sciences, and Associate Professor of the Department of Zoology, Histology, and Cytology at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Nadir Shamilovich Mamilov, celebrated his 60th birthday.
Nadir Shamilovich was born on February 22, 1966, in Almaty. In 1983, he graduated from Secondary School No. 54 and enrolled in the Faculty of Biology at Al-Farabi KazNU. In 1990, he graduated from the Department of Zoology and Ichthyology and began his career there as a senior laboratory assistant, progressing professionally from assistant to associate professor.
In 1991–1992, he completed internships at the Biotechnology Center of Lomonosov Moscow State University and the A.N. Belozersky Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology. From 1992 to 1995, he completed postgraduate studies at KazNU, and in 1997 he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation in Zoology. In 2017, he was awarded the academic title of Associate Professor.
Nadir Shamilovich is the author and co-author of over 100 scientific works. Notably, he contributed a chapter published in 2016 in the international monograph Biology of Perch (CRC Press). In Kazakhstan, two of his monographs and four textbooks have been published. Over the past three years, he has published 25 scientific articles, 21 of which are indexed in Scopus. His h-index is 8.
From 2003 to 2017, he led projects at the Research Institute of Biology and Biotechnology Problems. His research is particularly significant for studying the freshwater ichthyofauna of Kazakhstan and preserving biodiversity (SDGs 14–15).
His teaching activities are highly regarded; he was awarded the title “Best University Teacher – 2019.” Under his supervision, 3 Candidate of Sciences and 4 PhD dissertations have been defended. Currently, he supervises 3 PhD students in the educational program 8D05102 – Biology.
Nadir Shamilovich is a member of the Kazakh Committee “Man and the Biosphere” under the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, an IUCN expert on freshwater fish conservation, and a member of the editorial board of the journal Vestnik KazNU. Ecological Series.
In honor of his 60th birthday, a ceremonial gathering was held at the department, where colleagues, students, and faculty leadership recognized his significant contributions to science and education. Nadir Shamilovich was awarded the Al-Farabi KazNU medal “For Outstanding Work.”
