On March 18, 2026, a working meeting with a representative of CERN—one of the world’s leading research centers in fundamental physics and advanced technologies—was held at the Faculty of Physics and Technology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

The meeting was attended by the Dean of the Faculty, heads of specialized departments, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, as well as students at all levels—bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. Representing CERN, Ernest Zakrzewski, Advisor for International Relations and Educational Programmes, delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the organization’s key areas of activity, its unique research infrastructure, and its global contribution to the advancement of modern science.

Particular attention was given to opportunities available to students and early-career researchers. These include participation in international scientific collaborations, internships, and educational programmes offered by CERN. In particular, the Summer Student Programme was presented in detail. This programme provides students in physics, engineering, and computer science with a unique opportunity to work within international research teams, attend specialized lecture series, and engage with leading scientists from around the world. Participation in such programmes was noted to significantly contribute to the development of research competencies, critical thinking, and the expansion of professional networks at the international level.

During the meeting, a substantive discussion was held on the prospects for further development of cooperation between KazNU and CERN. Key areas of collaboration identified included the involvement of students and young researchers in projects related to high-energy physics, accelerator science, computational technologies, and big data analysis. Faculty representatives emphasized the importance of aligning academic programmes with the global scientific agenda, expanding academic mobility, and fostering joint research initiatives.

Special emphasis was also placed on the training of highly qualified next-generation specialists capable of effectively operating within the global scientific environment. Participants highlighted the importance of developing interdisciplinary competencies, mastering modern digital tools, and acquiring the skills necessary for working in international research teams. The meeting contributed to increasing students’ awareness of international academic and research career opportunities and encouraged their active participation in cutting-edge scientific projects.

The event is fully aligned with the strategic priorities of the university and contributes to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In particular, strengthening research capacity, advancing scientific infrastructure, and participation in global research initiatives support SDG 9 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.” Furthermore, expanding partnerships with international organizations such as CERN contributes directly to SDG 17 “Partnerships for the Goals,” fostering global scientific and educational cooperation.

The meeting concluded with an open discussion session, during which students received detailed answers regarding the selection criteria for CERN programmes, application requirements, and practical steps for participation in international research initiatives. The discussion was dynamic and demonstrated a high level of student engagement.

Overall, the meeting represents an important step in strengthening KazNU’s international cooperation, expanding academic and research opportunities for students, and advancing the university’s integration into the global scientific and educational landscape.
