Mobile English learning

A mobile learning test of students taking part in pilot project was conducted at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University from November 28 to December 2 2011. One hundred students of Humanity Studies in our university has learnt the first basic course of American English, and 95 of them have been tested.

Students at different language levels say that preliminary results show their language skills improvement in pronunciation and hearing native speaker’s speech. It thanks to unlimited experience of hearing and recording their own voice several times, in addition it doesn’t require large equipment like a PC or a notebook.

Teachers emphasize students’ high motivation and positive attitudes to the project. They have noticed that students are very happy when realize their ability to recognize familiar phrases and words in English films and songs.

The pilot project is based on complementation of innovative mobile learning method of any target language. Mobile phones used for language learning have a special installed software. This method has been developed by Swedish company “So To Speak”. The representatives of this company are the author Karl Hofso and his technical assistant Fouad Jazzar have been invited for Evaluation. The foreign language chair can use the testing “inherited” program for the next time.

Official sponsor of this pilot project is “Nokia-Kazakhstan”. It has provided 100 mobile phones for students and 10 – for teachers.
