Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was founded on January 15 in 1934, and laid a rich history in the future.

On January 19, 1934, in the building of the former Verny gymnasium, 54 students began their studies, including 32 physics and mathematics and 22 biological faculties.

On December 2, 1934, the university was named after S.M.Kirov.

After the end of the difficult war years, new faculties began to open. In August 1947, the Faculty of Geography was formed, in 1949 - the Faculty of Philosophy and Economics.

The result of the accession in 1955 of the Alma-Ata Institute of Law was the formation of the Faculty of Law.

Special mention should be made of the university campus, widely known as "KazGUgrad". Its history began precisely in these years. In 1966, it was decided to allocate a land plot with a total area of 70 hectares for the construction of educational buildings of the then Kazakh State University. CM. Kirov.

In December 1970, the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR decided to start construction of the first stage of the KazGU complex, and in April 1971, with the ceremony of laying the foundation of the main building, a unique project for the construction of KazGUgrad began to be implemented.
