A scientific seminar was held with the participation of professors from domestic and foreign universities
On December 7, 2023, the Department of Chinese Studies of the Faculty of Oriental Studies held a scientific seminar on the problems of simultaneous translation, the participants of which were professors from domestic and foreign universities, leading translators of domestic and foreign companies, doctoral students and undergraduates from various universities in the city. Professor of Xinjiang University Mr. Shao Penbo took part in the seminar as a special guest. The scientific seminar was organized within the framework of the disciplines “Innovative technologies and methodology for teaching translation”, “Modern translation concepts” and “Speech etiquette and negotiation practice in an Eastern language”, which are taught by Professor of the Department of Chinese Studies Fatimabibi Nogaykyzy Daulet for doctoral and master's students. The purpose of this scientific seminar is to provide an opportunity for communication and exchange of knowledge between participants, as well as to provide feedback and support for doctoral and master's students. The main speakers of the seminar were Professor Daulet F.N. and 1st year master's student Wang Yuting. Consecutive translation was carried out by 1st year master's student Baknar Dankey. During the seminar, speakers talked about common mistakes that occur when implementing interpreting, such as, firstly, a sudden stop during translation, secondly, the so-called “opposite translation”, thirdly, “selective translation” “When the main content of the source text is lost during translation, fourthly, this is an inadequate translation. All these mistakes can be made by the translator due to insufficient professional skills. The lecturers showed ways to overcome these errors, which can be implemented in the form of various exercises. After the lecturers spoke, the seminar participants expressed their opinions and suggestions. By the way, the guest of the seminar, Professor of Xinjiang University Mr. Shao Chenbo noted that one of the common mistakes during conference translation is a literal translation of the source text, word by word, without taking into account that in another language the first word of the original sentence may be the last in the translation sentence, as a result of which its meaning changes. This is especially true for oral speech, when the translator is forced to translate as quickly as possible in order to keep up with the speaker. Other speakers also noted that ignorance of the complete list of meanings of a foreign word, erroneous translation of consonant foreign words, confusion of nouns with proper names, and translation of phraseological units are also a headache for novice translators. In order to overcome and prevent the above-mentioned annoying mistakes in the future, novice translators need constant training, one of which is the workshop being held today.
