16 february, 2024

New Year is celebrated twice in Korea. The first is according to the Gregorian calendar, the second is the lunar calendar. This year, Lunar New Year was celebrated in Korea from February 9 to 12. On February 16, teachers of the Far East Department Kabdelova U., Saylaukenova A., Shatekova G., Begalieva M. organized a holiday among 1st year students of the Korean department of the Far East Department. The purpose of this event is to introduce first-year students to the Korean New Year, explain the meaning of the holiday, and talk about traditions.

"Solnal" is a New Year's holiday of the Korean people, celebrated on January 1 according to the lunar calendar. Solnal is one of the most important holidays for the Korean people. Therefore, this event at the department level is an invaluable opportunity for our students to become better acquainted with Korean culture.

The event began with congratulatory words from the head of the department of Abagan Akerke Bolatbekovna and professor of the department Lee Beng Jo. Special thanks to Em Hywon, master's student at Sukmyeng Women's University of the Republic of Korea, who took part in introducing our students to this wonderful bright holiday! Yeom Hivon is an intern at Sukmeng Women's University, who is undergoing teaching practice at the Department of Far East, Faculty of Oriental Studies, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. As a representative of Korean culture, she told students about the history and significance of the Solnal holiday, and introduced them to traditional Korean New Year dishes that are prepared for the holiday.

After the introduction, a question and answer session was held among the students on the topic “Solnal”. Active participants received small gifts from the education center at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea. At the end there was a conversation at the table where sweets were distributed, including the sweet, traditional “tteok”. We hope that this event not only broadened the horizons of the students of the department, but also had a positive impact on their relationships! We sincerely thank all the students and teachers who took part in the event and contributed to its success!
