From idea to inspiration: stages of creating a massive open online course “Basic processes and apparatuses of chemical technology”

At the International Winter School “Modern technologies of science and education organization” held on February 16, 2024, the developed MOOC course “Basic processes and apparatuses of chemical technology” was presented by acting associate professor Vassilina G.K. The members of the author’s team were associate professors Eshova Zh.T. and Akbayeva D.N. at the Chair of physical chemistry, catalysis and petrochemistry of the Faculty of chemistry and chemical technology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Such issues as course idea formation, design and planning process, content creation process, overcoming difficulties and lessons learned from working on the online course were comprehensively reviewed and discussed.

The developed MOOC course was uploaded to the website open.kaznu.kz and passed the internal and external expertise. It is integrated into the educational process of disciplines of the Spring semester of 2023-2024 academic year for students of specialties “6B07201 – Technology of pharmaceutical production” and “6B07102 – Chemical Engineering”. The course “Basic processes and apparatuses of chemical technology” is devoted to general approaches and techniques for calculation of basic parameters of chemical technology processes. This course is aimed at enabling students and trainees of chemical engineering specialties to master, consolidate and further analysis, mathematical description and engineering calculations for specific technological processes in their professional activity. Easy and quick access to the training materials on engineering discipline covering topics on hydrodynamic, thermal and mass-exchange processes, as well as free training schedule makes this course unique and convenient for students and engineers of chemical-technological profile on-the-job.
